Cancer

22 Friday Jan 2016

Today I found out that a wonderful and compassionate woman that I have known my entire life, was diagnosed with brain cancer.

She has always been kind and supportive of me, and forever an optimist with her cheery demeanour and outlook never seeming to fade, at least not that I’ve ever seen. Just the epitome of a “friendly neighbour” who you’d instantly trust.

Even as I grew into adulthood and moved away from the old neighbourhood, seeing her infrequently, whenever I did run into her, around town or out walking the dog with her husband along the Gorge Waterway, she was always keen to hear what I was up to in life, and quick to offer encouragement. She even jumped at the chance to do a mail drop for my City Council campaign in 2014.

As my thoughts are with you and your family, I wish you the best on this long road of treatment. It won’t be easy, but I have a feeling that not even cancer can diminish your eternal optimism.

Thanks to Facebook for reminding me that this was three years ago, hard to believe!

What an exciting time it was: After nearly 2 years of rebuilding the LPC following our 2011 defeat, we embarked upon a leadership contest kicking off in Vancouver which eventually saw Justin Trudeau elected as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

One Year At The Trust For Sustainable Development

19 Tuesday Jan 2016

Today is my 1 Year Anniversary as the Head of Government Relations & Communications for the Trust for Sustainable Development.

It has been a busy year serving as the company’s liaison with the municipal, provincial, and federal governments, as well as the media, and our partner on the Spirit Bay project, the Beecher Bay First Nation. One day I’m working on a government grant application, the next day I’m taking a film crew on a muddy trek across the development site, then I’m back into Victoria for a business lunch or meeting. It’s truly something new every day.

I’m not sure what 2016 will have in store for me, but I hope it’s as fun and as interesting as the past year has been!

Got within 300 meters of Syria today. Quite an experience to look out towards a country in turmoil from such a (relatively) safe place nearby.

Driving through the snow past minefields, barriers, and bunkers was truly surreal but we had an absolute blast 4x4ing around in an old combat jeep in true Canadian fashion: “Out for a rip!”
